WHAT IS MINDFULNESS??
Mindfulness is rooted in eastern philosophy and is over 2000 years old.
Mindfulness is a way of paying attention to the present
moment, on purpose, and non-judgmentally. Bringing one's
complete attention to the present experience on a moment-to-moment
basis. It's something you bring into every aspect of your life. And it will
support every aspect of your life...the positive and the negative.
Mindfulness is the 'in' thing. It's a fad to many people, just a buzz word.
Yet this perception can lead you to underestimate its benefits and qualities.
Mindfulness is a self-awareness practice. It is not religion based, you don't need to have faith in anything, you only need to train your mind.
It can be practiced by anyone whatever their beliefs or background.
It's benefits are vast: increased emotional awareness, decreased anxiety, increased focus, decreased worry, increased concentration, decreased depression... and on we can go. It increases all the healthy positive elements of your well-being and decreases the negative. And I did say decreases.
Sometimes people may assume that being mindful means you are free from all negative emotion, and in reality, that would be impossible...as we are human beings who experience emotion, a huge part of who we are. I personally still get angry at the inconsiderate drivers out there...I still shout, but I accept it for what it is and let it go. Like everything thing else in life: accept it, change it or let it go! Mindfulness helps decrease the impact of the instant emotions, it helps you see them for what they are, and supports you to know you have a choice, and it supports you to see that the emotion will pass-by. Mindfulness supports conscious awareness of the breath, and body regulation. The mind body connection.
Mindfulness practiced to its fullest potential, supports you to experience negative emotions. To see your thoughts for what they are, just thoughts. To let-go of the thoughts that may hinder your self-progression, and water the budding seeds of positive thoughts to enhance your self-development.
The first step is to STOP!!! BREATHE!! PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR THINKING!!!
Then you gift your conscious self with CHOICE...
"WHERE DO I FOCUS MY ATTENTION?"
The recognition of the thinking mind can lead to many things: recognition of negative thinking, recognition of free-will, choice, responsibility. All important things. Mindfulness supports you to go through these things non-judgmentally, supporting you to accept, let-go/embrace and walk forwards.
If you are in any way struggling with life, as in, even if this is only sometimes...it gets too much, the stress, the anxiety, the depression, the worry, the drama, the pain. And you want to free yourself of all that you can...then mindfulness is a practice, a technique...a tool that can help.
It supports you to address your thinking mind. To take stock of the moment and the possible effects of your thinking mind. Giving yourself choice. Carry on with this thought pattern or change it. It will help you to accept what is, to make steps towards what needs to be addressed, adapted and experienced, so that you can progress to reach your fullest potential.
Mindfulness living can deepen our human capacity and bring more meaningful, balanced and peaceful experiences to our lives.
